Clash of Cultures

Imperialism and Colonization

When does patriotism and nationalism go too far? To what extent should a culture try to reach out and help another? Is it important to try to "change the world" or should every culture be allowed to stay within its own beliefs, way of life, etc.?

  3. I say it is right to go to other cultures and try to change them if you know they are in the wrong. Missionaries are in the right trying to change different religions to the right one.

    5. Who says their in the wrong? They were perfectly fine with their way of life but the missionaries just disrupted them, and what religion is right and wrong really? Yours? An Islamist will say theirs and a Hinduist will say theirs, and an Atheist will say they're all wrong. The best you can do is live in harmony.

    1. If they are in the wrong, and you are in the right, it would be okay to change them because they need to know what is right.

    2. I see what you are saying but in some situations people's and beliefs and ways of living need to be changed for the better and like in the book the missionaries are just trying to watch out for the lost people of the village!

  7. No it's not right to change another culture. People should be able to do what they want or be what they want.

  8. It depends. If you know that you will change it for something right then it should be okay. But, if you go to a village and start telling the people to stab people then maybe you shouldn't. Like chandle said it dependssss!

    1. I agree and disagree with you because people are going to believe what they believe, but some religions tell you to spread the word and lead others to god.

  10. Sometimes because in some situations it is needed like in the book because some people need Jesus but in some situations no its not nessasary to come in and change people's ways.

  11. I believe that it is, because if you are committed to your religion then you should want to change everyone toward you. Some of the people may reject, but you have to respect their religion like yours.

  12. No because you shouldn't change someone because of who they are. I wouldn't want someone to change me.

  13. Nationalism can go too far when one goes out of their way to force their homes ideals and views on other people or nations.
Cultures should aid other if it is in their beliefs, but they should not help with the goal of changing these peoples religions and ways of life but help for the sake of helping.
"Changing the world" is a stupid notion because no matter how hard anyone works they won't be able to change some people's minds on their way of life without force and violence, which should be a last resort instead of a go-to plan.

  14. Yes but no at the same time because if they are bad they need to get their eyes opened and told they are wrong. No because it can effect their culture and get someone killed

  15. It depends on the situation

    1. I strongly disagree because the situation has nothing to do with your beliefs and the way you live.

  16. I believe that circumstances may vary; on one hand, it is not at all wrong to aid an ethnic group ( e.g. Provide education or supplies) or attempt to welcome them to new ideals. It is a different story, however, if one group attempts to force religion or a new form of government upon another. The expansion of religion is not wrong in itself, but should not be done by force.

  17. Well yes and no because sometime people have tradition that are bad and not right so their might be people who try to chage for the good. While on the other hand people might have tradition that are good and important and other people have no right to chage how people are if they doing good.
